This recent post about a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic (which also happens to be where I served as a PCV – read more about my service here) addresses the challenges facing a local women’s cooperative. Limited access to markets and a lack of proper manufacturing equipment present a significant barrier to growth. And to overcome these barriers, the women of Fruticoop, Inc. need training and access to capital necessary to purchase high quality equipment. This is a cottage industry that has the potential to make a significant local impact with some basic improvements. It is, if you will, ripe with low-hanging fruit…
